Notes for next year
I hope everyone had a pleasant journey home and that homecoming has been sweet. We've had a slow and restful afternoon, doing laundry, putting things away. Nettie is finally zen and at ease again. Before I forget, I thought I'd mention some notes on food use and leftovers to keep in mind for next year. We did really well this year: I'm sure that far fewer items were composted or thrown out or taken home than previous years (picture above is from the BBC documentary on decay--not representative of today's cleanup experience).
We did toss quite a bit of bread, mostly finger rolls, though, so that was a special circumstance. In general, bread buying was way closer to the mark. We tossed 9 bagels, a half of loaf of Hungry Ghost Batard, and a few other random items in the bread category.
We had too many large boxes of cereal: I'd say we could buy two fewer next year.
Juice: had two half-containers of fruit juice left.
Coffee: We drank 2.5 pounds of regular (so we need only 3 next year, plus the one decaf)
There was quite of bit of leftover mango salsa: I'm guessing it would work to make half as much next year.
We also composted two large plastic zip lock bags of cooked rice (both from burrito night?).
Produce: we all took some home, but there wasn't much. Some fruit. One tomato--I only had to compost two withered zukes.
There were several other leftover items, but these we all could take home without undue difficulty. Glad to have some supplies for the weekend.
Lots of nice thoughts of you all swimming in my head. Hope to see or speak with you soon.
Love,
Hayley

There were no meat leftovers!
on the advent of having less stuff this PH year, one idea i had was to think that we could put certain meal or leftover items into one mini-bin in the fridge.
ie, a small, low height plastic bin held all sandwich meat and sliced cheese. another...the rice, beans, salsa and shredded cheese from B Night...another, maybe the tapanade, stilton and fig jam from hors oeuvre's night. Pull that bin out, pair with crackers and you have the upscale snack tray.
ideally, this would reduce time of folks standing there with the fridge open, looking for snack or meal inspiration or will reduce the time of someone looking for a particular ingredient!
I realized i saw folks looking for burrito night leftovers, or what have you and thought this might be the tickets--to let someone grab and rummage through the burrito bin rather than routing through all the bags of vegetables and cheese and chicken on three or four or even five different shelves.
anyway, thought for next year.
Agreed. Good idea.
I LOVE that idea. Adding bins, masking tape & sharpie to org list for next year
What?!? There was leftover mango salsa??? I did NOT know that. I would have eaten it straight from the bowl. Really -- please don't halve the mango salsa this year. Just put it where I can see it. Guaranteed it'll be gone.
