Hey there parents of children: Otis and I had a brief talk about possible themes for a kid-based scavenger hunt activity and we came up with a pirate theme. Basic. Involves hunting for treasure, boating, and, a priority for Otis, sword-play. Scavenger hunt might involve finding pieces of the map, putting them together like a puzzle, and then finding the treasure using the map. Basically as close to last year's How to Train Your Dragon experience as possible with thin veneer of a new theme.

AAAARRRRR...
No longer the parent of a small child, I may no longer be entitled to have an opinion on this, but I think that's cool. Any excuse to swat each other with foam swords again!
I also have bookmarked some simple games (tag variants and the like) to share from the SCA crew leader book I was browsing through from the other day. some good small group games in there!
Love it! Paloma and I were just brainstorming a bunch of ideas.
I think I still have the same balloons we used last year for swords.
I found a pirate chest piñata! I'll get some pirate themed tattoos too.
For the craft idea, we did shields last time, how about we have them each make a pirate flag?
I will see if Avery has his pirate flag- could have it as a marker for clues.
Pirate flag's a good idea for a craft--I have an old sheet that can be cut up, and we can tie flags to sticks and decorate them with fabric paint and sharpies.
Hayley I’m so glad you and Otis are breathing life into our doing another ultimate fantasy /adventure/camp themed experience - Porter Hill Pirate style.
Our wall calendar for August has one of those priceless photos of the Viking boys in the canoe…. Love it. :
We’ll bring paper pirate hats and cheap eye patches and tattoos , … to have on hand for costumery for everyone who wants to get involved .
Instead of buying plastic fake coins and fake cheap shit/ candy for the piñata and other prizes - how ‘bout we clean up some good old Lincoln pennies (lots of info on line how to do so) and use them in the piñata? - mix them in with chocolate coins and even better, how ‘bout any “jewels” we have at home… (i.e.; raid our junk drawer for fun trinkets, old jewelry, gadgets, you name it- that kind of treasure..) And then for special rewards at the accomplishment of certain achievements on the treasure map route we could use Sacajawea coins or half dollars, or old NH toll tokens?? Scrounge and clean up some dirty money for the pirate cause?
And balloon swords! play battle and drama with so many of us involved- without injury or tiresome-boy-weapon-toy-sharing issues etc…
G- rated thrust and parry with abandon on B Hill!!
There is no doubt that the treasure of Porter Hill has so much more meaning than just loads of candy and sweets.. Quinn still has on his bureau the fern he collected and put in the glass jar for the hunt you had the first year he came… (rob keeps hoping t is the bud it looks like:)) and the Pokemon badges Avery made for them.. and on and on…
Any one else who has any pirate regalia please bring and we will add that to the prop supplies.
It’s fun to have fun with this. understatement. arghhh.
Trinkets trinkets who wants trinkets?? Max and I will dig around this week and find some for the piñata or treasures. Do we need black paint?
GREAt ideas. Thank you
Ill try to bring some compact art supplies and projects after camp this week for the kids too.
Thanks for getting this Rollin. Can't wait
I'm in for trinkets and cleaning up money. That'll be fun. Also: really glad the balloon swords can get some play again this year.
Oh--and any ideas on where to hang the piñata? Maybe outside someplace under a tree? I want to make the pirate map in advance if possible so knowing where the treasure is is step 1.
Whoo! Count me in-- trinkets up the wazoo here!
What about in the barn or hanging from the tree right behind the outdoor patio area?
I looked around and found lots of Mardi Gras beads and some doubloons. They're shiny and fun!
Arrrrr... I have 4 small plastic treasure "chests" (formerly human IgG ELISA test kits, totally safe)that small pirates can decorate with colored duct tape fer keepin' of their treasure in.... Arrrr.....
Also some coins & costumey jewelry
Batik pirate flags?!?! Crazy? Fun?

I'll bring some gel glue that I bought with the idea of batiking fabric at my art camp and an assortment of acrylic paints. We'll need to protect the table top we use.
