Hidden Experiences, or QUEST!

Hey--Mark, Ea, Anna and I were kicking back, sipping some beers (Anna was actually on decaf black tea), and well, getting creative. And we had some ideas. Good ones.

A scavenger hunt, but on an individual level. We will be creating a map of the house and property and bringing some waterproof cache bags to be filled with treasures and activities for those who wish to embark on personal quests. Some ideas for "hidden experiences" we thought of were some drawing paper and art supplies, poetry writing, delectable food and drink, disposable cameras, and little altars dedicated to the nymphs and fairies that make Porter Hill so magical. Yes, I said it and I meant it: the nymphs and fairies that make Porter Hill so magical.

This is your invitation to bring your own hidden experiences to the Hill!

This sounds delightful and very exciting, but I'm not quite getting it yet-- what is one to do??

You mean as a participant who's looking for hidden caches or one who creates one? It's a treasure hunt concept, with a map and a list of "experiences" provided. And it's flexible--people can make new caches, hide them, and add them to the list as our time at PH progresses. I'm inviting everyone to think of their own "experience" to assemble and hide.

It's a thing for all of us to be assemblers and receivers (as much or as little as we want).

Start thinking about the Porter Hill Hidden Experiences theme. Ca you think of a treasured PH memory and build an experience off of that for others to get a taste of? Or can you make one up?

Is there a little nook you love? Direct people there to experience it in some way. Does that experience require a paint brush, wine glass or poem? Those supplies will be stored or slightly hidden for seekers to find.

For example:

The Quest-er would grab an envelope at the "Hidden Porter Hill" Check In Table/wall, containing at least the following:

A)Directions (direct or cryptic-requiring more skill on the part of the Quester)

B)Whether it should be done solo or if it can (or should?) be done with one or multiple people

C) A description of what specific items or supplies the Quester needs to gather in order to participate in this Experience (like maybe you need to be in a bathing suit!)

BUT: Don't give away more. The search and surprise is part of the game. How hard the Quester must work is up to the creator of the experience, but the theme is to give Questers the opportunity to do something they probably wouldn't ordinarily do.

How It Could Work(for example):

We have an open station (Home Base?) somewhere at the house for the PH Hidden Experiences. There is a list of numbered "Experiences"; map of the property; perhaps a way to check in (sign out an envelope with instructions)

So you grab an envelope for Experience 1 (let's call it).

It tells you to head out front of the house; that you don't need to bring anything special; and that you can do this solo, with a partner or with others.

Upon examing the front yard in front of the house, you find a bag hanging from a tree. Inside the bag you find paper, pastels, crayons, markers. Instructions Inside: Draw your own rendering of the House. No matter what you think of your art skill. Take 5 minutes. Take an hour. Up to you. Then post it on the designated gallery wall (near the Home Base), so in the end we have many versions hanging together.

This is how I see it conceptually...it will likely be tweaked before we get to PH XI.

The hope is that the PHer would be inspired to create an experience for others to share and plant it somewhere on the property. Then we each can enjoy the other 6-8-10 experiences that others plant, and they, in turn enjoy ours.

Ea, I hear you saying all this is a soft, breathy, enticing voice-- Mark, you sound like Ea, only, more Mark-like... I'm entranced!!! I can't wait!!!! I WANT to draw the house!!!!! That's a real one, yes? I can't draw, but I want to do it anyway. Is one of the things to make up a silly song with the boys? And one to make popovers? One to assign a different button to every person in the house?? Build a fairy hut??? I want to build a fairy hut. And dig for china. And touch Jaylin's belly & make up a blessing for her baby-- is she coming this year??

Ah Ha Darling....if one of those things is one of your treasured PH memories, or at least you think it SHOULD be, then you should write that experience!! Think through how your experience (or 'ienceS) could be presented. What tools would you need to have on the site (pens, paper, clay, snack cakes, binoculars, scissors, nail polish)? Your directions to "Experience 2" will direct people to find those items and with them will be what to do with them. Each of us can create one or more experiences.

The field is (literally) wide open!

I am psyched too...i have a couple of fresh ideas and am thrilled to share them...at Porter Hill XI!

I can't wait to see what the Hiccup kids come up with!

Yeah, I thought the big boys could have fun dreaming up some experiences.

we had thought of waterproof 'bins' too for an experience, if that would be easier?

Whoever does do the map of the property (lets keep fairly simple structure/land- and we can fill in as we go along..) perhaps we should do it soon after we get there, so we can start putting our experiences up for others for immed consumption. also- we can always create more when up there too. (also see as a liklihood for stash/ave- getting into it after expeirencing a couple).

Mark says he's still on map-making. Bins and bags. Meant to go to the flea market this morning to get some cheapos but was too busy with birthday party(s) prep. Two today.
