Church Lady Luncheon
Anna's grandmother's memorial service concluded with church-basement refreshments and featured sherbet punch. It was so refreshing and delicious, I could have drunk the whole bowl. Not to be irreverent, but that punch suggested a meal theme to me: Church Lady Luncheon (close cousin of Mim and Chris's cocktails on the front lawn terrace, when they wore matching seer-sucker a couple years back). I think the front lawn would be a lovely place for punch, finger rolls, maybe something with some miniscule portions of vegetables for those among us who hanker for more than minced ham, pickles, mayo, and soft white rolls. Any one else find this notion appealing?

awww. thanks hayley. i dont find it irreverant at all. who doesnt love a good sherbert punch!?
also- the fact is, my grandother, had she made it, would have been 105 august 12th, the sunday of PH (originally i was going to scoot home for the celebration) so of course, i LOVE THE idea of bringing a little old lady summer food into the mix.
i'll have peaches to make something with, and can think of some other ideas. hayley - i dont know what meal this will be or what day it will fall on... but i would love to plan it with you...i make a MEAN cucumber sandwich. (open faced/cream cheese with dill...)
Two words: cucumber sandwiches!
Oh, good. I'd love to co-captain this. I think it would be good in an lunch slot. We can keep it pretty light. Yes, cucumber sandwiches. Radish sandwiches with butter and dill are also amazingly yummy.
And before I forget: zucchini bread, and cream cheese squares. Maybe a chop-chop style salad (lettuce hearts, chick peas, cucumbers, grated cheese, good creamy dressing, black olives) of some sort for an accompaniment.
So in on this. Chicken salad with tarragon and light mayonnaise on light bread. I loved that and could eat 100. Thin sliced white bread...can we get this from a bakery for these sandwiches?
As a time slot...lite sat lunch or in lieu of sunday brunch?
HELL YES on the chicken salad. I'd say this is a nice Sat. lunch concept. It can be earlyish--noon sharp, so that it isn't a gastronomical conflict with Burrito Night. I'd say we use thin white Pepperidge Farm bread for those sandwiches, and I'll investigate good finger roll bread: must be soft and white. Like New England Church lady bosoms.
this is all making me think about meals- a first shot at it. (maybe new email thread) but just some prelim thoughts...
fri- potluck, salads, corn, etc ( prepared shovel food anyone? maybe a little ice cream sandwich pie ea for desert?)
sat- ez breakfast,
12 noon lite church lady lunch
eve: burrito night
sun; brunch
ez do it yourself lunch
sun pm- maybe pizza/salad again? as co-captain, its fun- but a little intense. might love a break from captaining- anyone else want to give it a go. other thoughts?
its fun to talk about FOOD.
Like the "pot luck shovel-food" emphasis for Friday night. And the avoidance of the grill--I take it that that's a wild card as usual (or was there a new grill that works last year? Anyone? JJJ and John grilled us a meal that was delish--must have been working ok for that). OK--time for a new thread I think. Anna: I think brunch replaces EZ lunch. I do like one cooked breakfasty meal with eggs.
Grills are usually iffy, but Mim & John made it go last year! John & I are willing to do a grill night (he's been talking about making french fries with the turkey fryer for everyone). maybe Monday night could be grill night? Let us know what you think.
Also-- for the luncheon (which sounds divine to me), could there be some form of protein that doesn't include mayo? My guys won't touch it. They would love a little lunch meat (ham or whatever) on those super soft rolls. Radish sandwiches are my favorite, but I put thyme or rosemary on mine, if you're looking for an alternative to dill.
Sure, it's no problem to have some mayo free sandwich rolls for Stash and John. Grill night Monday sounds great (as does real deep fried fries!). Let's get the plan into a new post--maybe I can do that today.
If your guys don't mind, Jenn, maybe I can have their mayo.
I'll supply some Real Pickles, made local in Greenfield and winning national awards.
Beer drinkers: I'd be happy to order some kegs. I'd like to get at least one of Smuttynose IPA, but my staff are fielding suggestions.
wc - what about some fried chicken. i have a lovely recipe for a 2 day (brine/buttermilk) served cold is lovely...
Those pickles sound divine! And yes, you can have their mayo with their love & blessings. Beer! I love the old brown dog, or some form of summer ale. We had an IPA a couple years ago that I didn't mind at all, but I don't remember what it was...do you?
John likes it all, so he'll be pleased with anything.
And the fried chicken sounds delightful as well!
