Meals & Auction Timing

Hiya,

I’ve been feeling the need to get a dates/meals list started, so this is my best attempt at synthesizing all of the comments about food made so far and taking guesses on various meal captains. Please correct, disabuse, and refine my crude notions in the comments section.

Some lingering questions:
(1) Is auction night going to be Saturday evening, after an early picnic dinner, or Sunday, after brunch?
(2) Will we display auction items and conduct a silent auction for most items? (forms for this?) I endorse this plan. It DID go much more quickly last year with this format, and I think earnings were still robust.
(3) JJJ, will you kindly bring your big electric frying pan for Sunday Butchy Brunch?
(4) Is there another Google doc for common items (which include breakfast and lunch foods) and food for the assigned meals?
(5) Peter and William: can you bring NY bagels again?
(6) Who’s in for the whole ding dang time? This is good general info as well as helpful for room distribution. And . . . we do need to talk about room assignments. That’s another post!

Friday PM, Aug. 19
Dinner is pot luck—every family will bring a dish to share. We won’t rely on the grill (P&R: are you bringing yours?). Chores related to set up and clean up can be signed up for on the Google chore doc that Ea posted.

Saturday, Aug. 20
Breakfast: Help yourself: cold cereal, bagels (William and Peter bringing from NYC?) w/ fixins, fruit, toast, doughnuts, juice, COFFEE
Lunch: Help yourself (cold cuts, breads, cheeses, spreads, fruit, etc.)
Dinner (early, 4-5 pm): Grill Picnic, possibly with a Rocky Horror cocktail hour theme, Ea launches her “Beet yer Mary Bloody” cocktail, Captained by JJJ and John; meal to include steak tips, bbq chicken, corn on cob, salads, watermelon & roasted marshmallows for dessert

Sunday, Aug. 21
Hearty Late Breakfast: Kinda brunchy, but more butch and low-key: more English pub than country B&B, captained by Hayley and Mark
Dinner: Burrito Night, captained by Ea & Paloma

Monday, Aug. 22
Breakfast: Help yourself: cold cereal, bagels (William and Peter bringing from NYC?) w/ fixins, fruit, toast, doughnuts, juice, COFFEE
Lunch: Help yourself (cold cuts, breads, cheeses, spreads, fruit, etc.)
Dinner: Concept and captains to be determined (pizza, salad, & leftovers? I’ll help!)

Tues. Aug. 23
Breakfast: Help yourself: cold cereal, bagels (William and Peter bringing from NYC?) w/ fixins, fruit, toast, doughnuts, juice, COFFEE
Lunch: Help yourself (cold cuts, breads, cheeses, spreads, fruit, etc.)
Dinner: Concept and captains to be determined, but I humbly suggest that Peter consider captaining a Leftovers Smorgasbord Feast

Weds. Aug. 24
Breakfast: Help yourself: cold cereal, bagels (William and Peter bringing from NYC?) w/ fixins, fruit, toast, doughnuts, juice, COFFEE
Lunch: Help yourself (cold cuts, breads, cheeses, spreads, fruit, etc.); leftover food distribution/clean up (see Google chore doc)

Whoops! OK, back tracking here--
Hayley & Mark-- feel free to take on the delightful- sounding butchy brunch (I'll definitely bring the big ass pan & make some bloody marys!) Whoot!

Saturday afternoon grillinic is Mim (John wants to help as well)-- room for more if Chris wants in still. Menu to be determined by those guys.

Sunday evening is the big beautiful burrito night, with the usual suspects, I presume (correct me if I err...)

Monday night I'll happily help Anna Banana, either as a co-captain or a scullery slut-- whichever is most needed. I am not familiar with grilling pizza, so we may also need that person, but I can make pesto & salads and whatevah whatevah and I can bring lots and lots of bulk sargento chezes

Does this work it out pleasantly? Feel free to refine...

Also, I think there was some early objections to silent auction items living on the pool table, where they were subject to much confusion over ownership and perhaps molestation. Perhaps a few silent auction items could be kept on the shelves and mantle in the den? Just a thought.

I don't have a firm opinion about when we hold the actual thing. I do enjoy it at night when we're all together & whooping it up, but maybe that works less well with so many little ones. Whenever it is, I'll be there with bells on.

I don't know why that posted twice-- so sorry.
Also-- list of common items & poyluck is on the same spreadsheet as chore assignment-- just scroll down-- much of that should be reset/edited from last year

Who's ordering the beer this year? John wants to know if he should start prepping the kegerator...

THANK YOU HAYLEY and JJJ!!!!!
(I feel like I am channeling dear Owen Meany there)--ok, so chiming in with a few things and more later-:

- We need to leave to leave Tuesday morning.

-We love auction and yes, like Hayley I thought that besides a few blips, the silent auction with the forms and good-natured anticipation was fun and productive before the big one. But I am not attached to the structure, but yes, very much attached to the actual auction happening in some form.

-Sadly our grill is rusting into dust and will not be attending PH this year

-I think potluck Friday is great and I also think its really nice to be sure to have good food for everyone settling in and food we can leave out for a bit with everyone arriving at different times, etc- so it will be good to flesh that menu out more.

-For the record, personally I am not planning on being pregnant this year and so I am looking forward to getting to participate in the thrill of some of the things that I missed last year like playing “Werewolf” and just, like, “every other single frickin’ thing that happened daily after 3:00 PM” just saying.
xoxo.

hi gang, i also would like to have the silent auction before the big one. i think mim and i made the forms. will check with her, and can do again.
i have an idea that may work in favor of freeing up the pool table. The area where we usually keep all the snacks- that huge table in the foyer- had come up in convo a couple times- its so big and plentiful with food, and with max otis getting older and reaching further for sugar, i'd been wanting to help find a different spot for some of the snacks. (unlike avery and stash who seemed to ask before eating oatmeal pies, max is a sneak). Not to mention my own efforts at eating less sugar/snacks- its like the hallway of Great temptation. so... if folks agree- i can make an effort to be creative and make more room in other areas of the hall kitchen for those snacky items, and we can use a 1/2 or 2/3 section of that table some silent auction items? its certainly a place we all go by a lot, and would free up the pool table for play, etc.

oh- and jjj - if you want to do pizza salad night with me, we just need a griller- (chris can do this part!) and we can do the rest. maybe one more person- i think rob helped too- that was great. and william was the courier for the grilled pizzas to kitchen. if its hot like this- maybe we'll switch to bruchetta! :) its a fun meal to use some leftovers, but add with the yummy artichockes, pesto, goat cheese, etc- YUM. lets talk jjj. xo

Sounds good, Anna!

I think silent auction was fine with the exception of the rated R item(s). Keep the silent auction stuff (location, wherever) PGish and we should be fine. If I am missing other issues that made it not work well for other reasons, forgive moi.

Timing? If it's a down and dirty hour, I'd still think after dinner Sat is good.

On the snack stuff...I thought of this too. It could be just as easy to keep those treats in a box on top of the dresser near where we usually stash the booze, etc. Those who are allowed to snack with impunity will know where to go and will be tall enough to reach. Parents who want more control can choose not to disclose the location and only have the specific treat appear magically when appropriate. Also, being more out of the way reduces temptation for those who wish for less glycolic excess.

Butchy brunch? Grillnic? I love that our quote board has started before we even get there!

oh, and I sent around a copy of the common kitchen sheet for folks on the google doc. Let me know if that didn't make it to you.

JennyJJ said...

R-rated?? What did I miss?? Or did I just block it out because of the trauma?

JennyJJ said...

Ea-- is your common items list separate from what's at the end of the chores spreadsheet? I thought it was all one thing-- let me know if I'm wrong.
Palo-- SO can't wait to werewolf with you!
Anna B-- I have bins we can use to help with snackcake subterfuge,if you like. Sounds like we want to maybe scale down a little this year?
Hayley-- want to sing, Sistah!

JennyJJ said...

I'll be there until Wednesday (not sure yet if John is leaving Tuesday night or Wednesday)-- need to help clean up to make up for cranky-pukey fast exit last year! PS-- has anyone seen the ladder balls??

JJJ__There are two lists and now I am super confused.

THe list that is below the chore assignment looks like it was more oriented towards the potluck aspect, but grew to include the other items. I am unsure how updated this is but right now it is a hybrid of new and old.

THe Common Kitchen sheet was more of an alphabetical list just of things people were bringing for common use or where there would be extra of something from a meal that could be common use for others.

Does that make sense? I think we just need to pick one or the other and note what are the 2011 updates.

JennyJJ said...

I think it's fine to just delete the end of the chores spreadsheet-- I don't think it's been updated much, if at all. Could you send me the link to the common items list, though? I don't seem to have that one.

JennyJJ said...

NEVERMIND-- I FOUND IT!!!

Kegorator: yes. I'll order the beer. What do we want to get?

Hayley said...

Beer vote: one quarter keg of a pilsner.

What else: general nod and fist-pump of support for the reorganization/hiding of sugary snacks. Otis will happily O.D. on whatever sugary packaged item he can grab and I'd like a little more control without the need to be vigilant. Also: like the idea of using the breezeway table for auction items, although the lighting is not good.

This isn't really related, but it reminds me of an idea Ea and I had for a craft table on the porch: remove the wood-framed furniture (put in garage) and put a folding table for craft stuff there, perhaps? This does interfere with Werewolf a bit--but we could play that elsewhere? Porch seems to be the only decent place for inky papery stuff.

JennyJJ said...

I feel like we do end using that couch out there for more socializing than that-- I'd hate to lose good gathering space. I'll bring an extra folding table, but maybe we could put that in the garage instead & leave the couch open for loungers? Or maybe we could use the breezeway table, since it should be free of temptation as well as auction items after Saturday night?

JJJ_the garage is too gross, though i wish it or the barn were more hospitable. When we buy it it, we will redo it.
